The Essential Dovetail Jaws

Dovetail jaws are the foundational set for many turners, designed to grip a spigot (tenon) or expand into a recess.

  • Type C Jaws are one of the most versatile sets. They expand into a dovetailed recess and include a stepped shoulder that provides an internal grip on a spigot, making them suitable for bowls and end grain work like boxes and goblets. This stepped internal shoulder allows for a firm grip on accessories like a screw chuck plate or a morse taper adapter.
  • Type E Jaws are the typical standard jaws; their internal and external dovetails give a 48mm (~2”) tenon grip and a 68mm (2 ⅝”) internal recess grip.
  • Other common dovetail types include the Type A (expands into a 100mm recess, grips a 60mm or 25mm spigot), the Type B (expands into a 62mm recess, compresses onto a 25mm spigot), Type D (features a 25mm dovetail for recesses and a 12mm plain bore), and Type F (machined with both an internal and external dovetail, plus a plain bore section for smaller spigots).
  • Type M (Mega) Jaws are your preferred choice for large-scale turning. These large jaws feature a 100mm internal dovetail and a 125mm external dovetail, perfect for turning large platters.

Specialty and Heavy-Duty Grips

When you need serious holding power for demanding materials or larger pieces, these heavy-duty jaws are indispensable:

  • Gripper Jaws: All feature a parallel serrated interior grip. Available in configurations like Type BF (small), H (medium), G (large), and Colossus, these jaws are designed to provide a massive grip on large diameter, parallel material. Featuring either a dovetail or a parallel, serrated grip on the exterior (used for expansion into a recess), they are ideal for end grain pieces and hollow forms..
  • Deep Grip Jaws: Distinguished by coarse serrated teeth on both the interior and exterior surfaces, these are specifically recommended for turning unseasoned (green) timber or large hollow forms. These are a favorite for pieces in between 2 and 4”.
  • Cylinder Jaws: These are built to grip long, thin projects along a substantial portion of their length. They enhance functionality by utilizing internal and external dovetails at the ends.
  • O’Donnell Jaws: These jaws offer a deep recess specifically for holding long spigots, providing a solid mount for turning far from the headstock without needing tailstock support. They are dovetailed inside and outside at the lip and facilitate close tool access around the jaws. The three sizes (25mm, 38mm and 50mm) provide a wide range of dovetail grip for smaller projects. While a dovetail depth of 4.5mm may seem short, the substantial material behind the jaws makes sure the grip does not slip.
  • Expanding Pin Jaws: Excellent for holding green wood, these are inserted into a drilled hole (typically 25mm diameter minimum x 40mm deep maximum) and expanded outward to grip using the full depth of the jaw. These are exceptionally versatile jaws that can hold burls blanks, natural edge blanks, peppermill bodies, and pen blanks—the possibilities are extensive.   • Internal and External Step Jaws: These stepped jaws, made from aluminum, are similar in design to engineer’s chuck jaws. Each set has a 3mm minimum capacity in the center, then steps at radii of 17mm and 34mm. The heights of the steps are 10mm, 16mm and 22mm. Internal jaws expand to grip on the inside, external contract to grip on the outside.

Finishing and Custom Jaws

You typically use these jaws for secondary operations, finishing, or custom applications:

  • Button Jaws: Available in 150, 250, and 400mm sizes, these jaws are often made of machined aluminum and use conical white rubber buttons to grip a workpiece by its exterior edge. This design prevents damage to the rim during final finishing.
  • Wood Jaw Plates: These are pre-drilled steel quadrants (100 or 150mm) that allow you to mount custom-made wooden jaws. This is particularly useful for safely and easily removing spigots from the bottom of bowls.
