While gouges and lathes are the primary instruments of the woodturner, a shop air compressor is a remarkably versatile companion. Compressed air provides turners with solutions for delicate carving, vivid embellishments, safe chip removal, tool maintenance, and even respiratory health.
Moving air in the reverse, or vacuum air also has its place in the workshop. As it provides healthier air for the turners and provides some unique application in the processing of wood and materials.
Embellishment and Carving: Some of the most intricate embellishments in wood art rely on pneumatics. Turners often use air-powered dental handpieces for delicate piercing and carving. While these air units lack the torque to hog out large amounts of timber, they are perfectly suited for fine detail. Vacuum Assistance: Moving air in reverse or vacuum is a process that can add new possibilities with materials used in woodturning. Connecting a vacuum pump along with a vacuum chuck on the spindle allows for holding work with the power of suction. It is now possible to turn without using a tenon or recess. The vacuum should be monitored with a gauge to ensure there is an adequate and constant amount of holding power.

Hollowing and Chip Removal: Turning enclosed hollow forms or miniature vessels presents a unique physical challenge: clearing out the waste wood. If these shavings are not removed, they can bind the cutting tool and cause a dangerous catch. Stopping the lathe and using compressed air is a highly effective way to blow these accumulated shavings out of the vessel’s interior so you can resume cutting safely.

Finally, a filtered air mover, usually hung from the ceiling, cleans the ambient shop air through continuous circulation. The use of all three will contribute to a healthy environment for the turner.
