One of the most fundamental choices a turner makes is whether to work with face grain or end grain. This grain orientation decision dramatically affects the cutting technique, tool selection, and can affect the final quality of the piece.
Face Grain:
In face grain turning, the wood fibers run perpendicular to the lathe axis. This is the standard orientation for bowl turning, where a log is split and mounted on its face. The tool encounters alternating end grain and side grain twice per revolution, which makes inspecting your cutting surface important.

Face Grain Cutting:
- Direction: Cuts are made from the center toward the rim on the exterior and from the rim toward the center on the interior. This supports the fibers and prevents tear-out.
- Tool Choice: Bowl gouges are preferred for their strength and safety in cross-grain work.
- Technique: Effective cutting requires bevel rubbing, where the heel of the tool’s bevel stays in light contact with the wood. Tool presentation is key and cutting “downhill” (in the direction that supports the fibers) are crucial for clean cuts.
- Finishing: Shear scraping can produce fine shavings and leave a surface which requires minimal sanding.

End Grain:
Here, the fibers run parallel to the lathe axis. This orientation is typical for spindle turning (such as legs or finials) and hollowing vessels like goblets or boxes. This elevated candy dish was turned from a full log section producing a natural edge rim. The fibers are oriented like a bundle of straws pointing directly at the turner, which changes the cutting dynamics significantly.

End Grain Cutting:
- Direction: Hollowing is done from the center outward. Exterior cuts move from large diameter to small diameter (“downhill”) to keep fibers supported.
- Tool Choice: Scrapers (especially negative-rake scrapers) and specialized tools like hook or ring tools are often more effective for hollowing end grain. Carbide cutters are also popular for their scraping action.
- Technique: Tool presentation is key and cutting “downhill” (in the direction that supports the fibers) are crucial for clean cuts. Smoothing the exterior can be peeling, slicing or scraping with a gouge, skew or scraper. The interior can be drilled, cut and scraped with a variety of tools. For deep hollowing, a pilot hole with a Forstner bit is often drilled first.
